South Sudanese musical experts were invited to compose a national anthem in August 2010. Students from the University of Juba won this competition after three rounds with the piece, “South Sudan Oyee”. A technical committee arranged the original text, which was then adopted as the national anthem. The first verse expresses gratitude for the abundant natural resources of the country; the second, glorifies the peace the nation currently enjoys, while the third verse recalls the long struggle for the independence of South Sudan.

Oh God
We praise and glorify you
For your grace on South Sudan,
Land of great abundance
Uphold us united in peace and
Oh motherland
We rise raising flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy,
For justice, liberty and prosperity
Shall forever more reign.
Oh great patriots
Let us stand up in silence and respect,
Saluting our martyrs whose blood
Cemented our national foundation,
We vow to protect our nation.
Oh God bless South Sudan.
