He identifies the German reunification and the end of the Cold War as great success of international diplomacy. He mentions the shocking events in the beginning of 2015; the murder of hundreds of people by Boko Haram, the Terrorist attack on the French magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’ where 17 people died and the response to the attack when millions of people demonstrated against hatred and intolerance around the world. 2015 will become a tough year for diplomats, the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and the refugees risking their lives to come to Europe are still unsolved. His speech also included the topics: end of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015, climate change and the role of Germany in the globalized world
